My grandmother had hair almost two metres long. She never used a shampoo bottle in her life. When I began to struggle with my own scalp, I went back to her rituals — and then went further, asking why they worked.

The dried pods of the Bồ Kết tree, simmered in water until the kitchen smells of earth and rain. The saponins that form create a gentle, earthy lather that has cleansed Vietnamese hair for five centuries — mildly, rhythmically, disturbing nothing that did not need disturbing.

The water left from washing rice, allowed to ferment for days. In Vietnamese households the water was kept rather than poured away — used on its own, or after a bồ kết wash. Not a ceremony. Simply what was already in the kitchen. What it contributes is real, and narrower than the story usually suggests.
