The first step of the ritual. Massaged into the lengths and left to absorb before washing, coconut oil’s lauric acid penetrates the hair shaft — the form and manner in which its protein-loss benefit was actually measured. This is the treatment the tradition of pre-wash oiling was built on, now made deliberate.

Mechanism
Lauric acid shaft penetration
Most plant oils only coat the hair. Coconut oil’s high lauric-acid content — a small, straight-chain fatty acid — lets it slip into the shaft. Published research (Rele & Mohile, 2003) found coconut oil reduced protein loss in both damaged and undamaged hair, uniquely among the oils tested.
Why pre-wash
Time is the active step
The benefit depends on absorption. Left on for 30–60 minutes before washing, the oil occupies the shaft and limits how much water the fibre takes up — reducing the swelling that lifts protein out during a wash. The waiting is not ritual for its own sake; it is the mechanism.
Best suited to
Thick, dry & processed hair
Rich and substantive, this treatment suits the hair types most prone to protein loss and moisture stress — thick, curly, dry, or chemically processed lengths. Applied to mid-lengths and ends, not the scalp. Two to three times a week.
