Does Coconut Oil actually protect hair?
Yes — and here coconut oil is unusual: it carries some of the strongest peer-reviewed evidence of any botanical in hair care. It is the only common oil shown to genuinely penetrate the hair shaft and reduce protein loss during washing. But that protection is a fibre-level effect. It is not a growth claim, and we do not make one.
The short answer, and why it matters
Most oils sit on the surface of hair. They add slip and shine, then rinse away, doing little for the strand itself.
Coconut oil behaves differently. Its small, linear molecules — dominated by lauric acid — slip past the cuticle and into the cortex, the protein-rich core of the hair. Once inside, they reduce the protein the hair loses each time it is washed. Less protein lost means less cumulative weakening, which means less breakage over time. That is the honest mechanism: not growth, but the protection of what you already have.
How an oil gets inside a hair: the penetration finding
When hair is wet it swells as water floods the cortex, stressing the internal structure and lifting the cuticle. Repeated swelling and drying is a major route to damage.
Applied before washing, coconut oil is drawn into the fibre and limits how much water it absorbs, reducing the swelling that does the harm. The penetration is not folklore — it has been shown directly with secondary-ion mass spectrometry, which tracked coconut oil moving into the fibre where mineral oil did not (Ruetsch et al., 2001).
The most important finding: measured protein protection
The landmark work is Rele and Mohile (2003) in the Journal of Cosmetic Science. They compared coconut, sunflower, and mineral oil on undamaged, bleached, and thermally damaged hair, measuring protein lost during washing.
Coconut oil was the only one of the three that meaningfully reduced protein loss — and it did so across every hair type tested. The effect was strongest as a pre-wash treatment, applied before the hair meets water. This is why our ritual begins with oil rather than ends with it.
Why coconut oil stands where others cannot
This is the finding that earns coconut oil its place: among the oils commonly used on hair, it alone reduces protein loss in both healthy and damaged strands.
Not because it is exotic or ancient, but because its molecular shape lets it do something the others cannot — enter the fibre and stay there through a wash.
What the science does not show
We hold to one rule: an ingredient is described only by what the evidence supports. So, plainly — coconut oil does not make hair grow. No oil does. It does not reach the follicle, does not lengthen the growth phase, does not reverse thinning.
What it does is reduce breakage, so the length you are already growing is less often lost. That is real and measurable, but it is protection, not growth. Anyone who tells you an oil grows hair is selling the story, not the science.
